Insects, birds, and bats independently developed wings, despite belonging to different animal groups. When similar physical characteristics emerge in unrelated species, it is referred to as evolutionary convergence (convergence = approximation, agreement). The Messel Pit also has numerous examples of this. In this way, the animals from Messel share a lot with animals that are still alive today.
