In China, "Tian Tsui" is the name given to the 2000-year-old art of making jewellery objects such as this tiara from the iridescent feathers of the kingfisher. For this, feathers were glued individually onto a metal base. In China, jewellery made of kingfisher feathers was the privilege of the empress and her court until the 19th century. The tiara from the HLMD's collection was created later when the regulations were relaxed and feather jewellery could also be worn by women who did not belong to the imperial court.
