Ultramarine means "from beyond the sea" in Latin. In fact, it comes from Afghanistan, where the precious stone lapis lazuli - the raw material for genuine ultramarine - is still mined today. In an elaborate process, the mineral lasurite, which gives the stone its blue colour, is washed out of the lapis lazuli. Trade routes, middlemen and the complicated manufacturing process make genuine ultramarine an expensive pleasure to this day.
