The painter, known to us only by his initials L.Cz, was unaware of the "Fern Craze." In the late Middle Ages, he painted ferns onto a rock to depict the surroundings of the Mount of Olives, the setting for the Passion of Christ. The fern is part of a meadow studded with buttercups, lily of the valley, strawberries, chicory, clover, and cranesbill.
