Soundtrack (or optical sound) is recorded with a so-called optical sound camera. The varying electrical impulses of the sound are transmitted to a photocell via the microphone. This photocell "draws" the light beam in brighter and darker gray shades – known as variable-density soundtrack – onto the negative.
