Asta Nielsen was one of the first major stars of the silent film era. Between 1911 and 1916, she made 24 films in Germany and continued her success in the cinema of the Weimar Republic. Among her works was HAMLET (DE 1921), which she produced herself, and in which she played the title role, conceived as a woman.
