The magic lantern was first officially mentioned in a book by the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher. In his drawing, however, there is an error: the glass images (or their projection) should actually be upside down. Whether there is a deeper meaning behind Kircher's illustration is still a matter of debate today.
