The community of Messel first learned of the landfill plans through the press. Among the residents, resistance formed in the shape of a citizens' initiative. Their concern was environmental protection, particularly the legitimate fear of groundwater contamination. However, another group was also interested in the pit: the researchers from the Hessian State Museum. They had conducted their first excavations here in 1966/67.
