Emil Jannings and Luise Rainer remain the only Germans to have received Oscars® as best leading actors. Their life paths could not have been more different: after his Oscar win in 1929, Jannings returned from Hollywood to Germany and became a beneficiary of the Nazi regime. Luise Rainer emigrated to the USA in 1935 and helped many Jews to escape from Germany.
