The name "Messeler Ölschiefer" (Messel Oil Shale) might cause some confusion: this so-called oil shale does not actually contain oil and it is not even a shale. Rather, it is a shale-like sedimentary rock (that is, layered) which can be processed into oil. It consists of sediments from Lake Messel, about whose origin there were also formerly misconceptions.
