HR Giger was recommended to the director by none other than Salvador Dalí. The Spanish star artist had once made the first surrealist film AN ANDALUSIAN DOG with Luis Buñuel. Jodorowsky wanted to cast him as the Emperor. Since Dalí demanded 100,000 US dollars per hour on the set, Jodorowsky planned to replace him in most scenes with a mechanical robot.
